I enrolled in the Beginner Japanese Course at Kazumi Japanese & Culture School following news from my company of a new client in Japan. I freaked out because I didn’t know one word in Japanese. But my instructor turned the language into a journey rather than an obstacle. Her manner of storytelling, worksheets and gentle correction helped me to solidify my basics without doubts. I can also now formally introduce myself, engage in small talk and read simple hiragana signs. I’d never thought that a language could sound so warm and rhythmic. They didn’t just teach me the words; they armed me with the courage to speak in new cross-cultural codes.

I signed up for the Japanese Language Course at Kazumi Japanese & Culture School, as I had wanted to have an extra “paper skill” for my resume. The experience was an even richer one, however. Our teacher was great at magically simplifying grammar and kanji. He incorporated scenes from anime, news clips and everyday examples that made classes fun and practical. I never thought I would make it through N5 on my 1st trial! Beyond the certificate, I learnt self-confidence and discipline. The way this school mixes language and culture is just right for beginners like me.

My logistics work brings me into contact with Japanese customers, and misunderstandings are regularly a barrier to deals. That’s when I enrolled in Kazumi School’s Business Japanese Course. My teacher instructed us in keigo (formal speaking), proper email etiquette and Japanese business culture — something that YouTube could never teach us. Once I’d done that course, my conversations became much more fluent. Now, my manager lets me do only Japan-based coordination. This course not only improved my Japanese skills but also turned around my career path.

I decided to be a student of Kazumi School not for the job, but for my love for Japanese literature. The Culture & Conversation program was just what I’d hoped for. Our tutor mixed language lessons with traditional seasonal sayings, manners, folklore, and even composing haiku. It was easier to have conversations because you had stories and traditions. At the end of the course, I was able to have conversations about feelings and books and festivals – something that I had never thought possible for someone who wasn’t a native. It was truly soul-enriching.

I took N5 somewhere else, but not knowing what to do moving onto N4, I enrolled in Kazumi Japanese & Culture School. It was the best decision. My teacher broke up the complex grammar into easy-to-understand explanations and simple exercises. We read menus, train announcements and short articles until everything felt automatic. I finally had a grasp of the way that Japanese actually works. Upon completing the course, I passed JLPT N4 and also gained more confidence speaking without overthinking my sentences so much. Kazumi helped lay a foundation I didn’t have.

I couldn’t speak Japanese even after studying for about six months. A friend recommended the Pronunciation & Accent Training course of Kazumi School. My sensei patiently adjusted my pitch accents, my rhythm, and my intonation. We rehearsed dialogues the way we would rehearse a drama. It changed everything about how I talked. Even my Japanese colleague used to say I now sound “natural and clear”.

As my work is related to hotels, I often face Japanese tourists. From the course at Kazumi School, I learnt polite phrases, hospitality etiquette, and some service-related vocabulary. My trainer also helped me correct my gestures and accent. Now, I interact with my guests much better, and they note my differences most of the time. Therefore, my professional skills have developed thanks to the course.

A last-minute work assignment in Tokyo compelled me to sign up for the Crash Course in Japanese Language at Kazumi School. In a few weeks, I had also learnt how to navigate stations, order food, ask directions and handle emergencies. My kind tutor ensured all my lessons were situation-based, as though I was practising real-life Japan. By the time I got to Tokyo, I was travelling with uncanny freedom. The short course turned my trip into an enjoyable and stress-free one.

After I saw how interested in anime seeped into my 10-year-old daughter’s life, I signed her up for the Kids’ Japanese Course. The trainers at Kazumi School employed games, flashcards, singing and drawing exercises that worked so well for my daughter. My daughter is now able to both sing Japanese rhymes and read basic Hiragana. She even communicates in small sentences at home. The school honed her interest into a genuine skill, and I was grateful for their gentle handling of the process.

Once I passed N3, my goal was to speak naturally without the need for any translations. The Advanced Conversation Course at Kazumi School challenged me in the best way. Our teacher led discussions, role-plays and storytelling activities all in Japanese. I learnt phrases, idioms and how to structure a conversation. This course is what finally made me feel “at home” in the language.
